Pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine are revolutionizing the practice of pharmacy and medicine.  Are you prepared?  This interactive, practice-based program will teach health care professionals and students the fundamentals of pharmacogenomics and how to use this information to improve patient care.  The program addresses competencies outlined by the Genetics and Genomics Competency Center (G2C2) and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).  Clinical, case-based scenarios will be covered, including oncology and targeted therapeutics; cardiology; drug-induced hypersensitivity reactions; pain, neurology, and psychiatry; and transplantation. 

  • Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental pharmacogenomic concepts and nomenclature.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how genetic variation contributes to inter-individual variability in drug pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and adverse effects.
  • Obtain pharmacogenomic information via popular web-based resources (e.g., PharmGKB).
  • Recommend pharmacogenomic testing, when appropriate, to aid in drug and dose selection.
  • Evaluate the results of pharmacogenomic tests and apply the results to patient care.
  • Critically evaluate the pharmacogenomics literature, including genome-wide association studies.
  • Use evidence-based guidelines to formulate patient-specific medication plans based on pharmacogenomic test results and other patient factors.
  • Communicate pharmacogenomic-specific medication recommendations to the health care team.
  • Educate health care professionals and patients about the indications for and clinical utility of pharmacogenomic testing.
  • Educate health care professionals and patients about the ethical, legal, social, and economic implications of pharmacogenomic testing.
  • Identify the key elements of pharmacogenomics implementation and formulate a clinical pharmacogenomics implementation plan.

Christina Aquilante, Pharm.D., FCCP, is Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Aurora, Colorado, USA.  Dr. Aquilante received her Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2000) and completed a pharmacy practice residency at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida 2001).  Following residency, she completed a post-doctoral fellowship in cardiovascular pharmacogenomics at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy (2003).  Dr. Aquilante joined the University of Colorado School of Pharmacy faculty in January 2004.  She maintains an active clinical pharmacogenomics research program focused on cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and has over 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. 

Dr. Aquilante is the Chair (2017-2018) of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Pharmacogenomics Special Interest Group (SIG).  She represents the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) on the National Institutes of Health (NIH/NHGRI) Inter-Society Coordinating Committee for Practitioner Education in Genetics and Genomics (ISCC).  She is a member of the Clinical Pharmacogenomics Implementation Consortium (CPIC) and is the Chair of the ACCP Research Affairs committee (2016-2017).  Dr. Aquilante is the Co-Chair of the Pharmacogenomics Implementation Committee Colorado (PICColo), a system-wide clinical pharmacogenomics implementation initiative at University of Colorado Health.

Dr. Aquilante is passionate about education and teaches in many areas of the Pharm.D. and Pharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Program curricula.  In 2014, she developed and implemented a required clinical pharmacogenomics course for all entry-level Pharm.D. students at the University of Colorado.  In 2016, she developed and implemented a required clinical pharmacogenomics course for working pharmacists participating in the University of Colorado North American-Trained Pharm.D. (NTPD) and International-Trained Pharm.D. (ITPD) Programs.  Dr. Aquilante also taught a live, 30-hour clinical pharmacogenomics training symposium to health care professional at the Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt in Cairo, Egypt in January 2017.
